The Roly-Poly book by Laura Rountree Smith
I stumbled upon this book by accident, a digital copy of a story first published over a century ago. I'm so glad I did. It’s a quiet, lovely little tale that deserves to be remembered.
The Story
The hero is Roly-Poly, a pill bug (or woodlouse, if you prefer). He’s happy in his damp, dark home under the porch. But one day, a curious boy lifts his board, and the sunlight sends Roly-Poly scrambling. He gets lost and finds himself in the middle of the vast, terrifying lawn. His only goal is to get to the rosebush on the other side, which he knows means safety. The journey is epic for someone his size. He navigates towering grass, avoids a pecking chicken, hides from a stalking cat, and is nearly washed away by a sudden ‘rainstorm’ from a watering can. The scariest moment comes when a child’s hoop comes rolling directly at him! Through it all, he relies on his wits and his ability to curl into a perfect, hard ball—his best defense.
Why You Should Read It
What I loved most is the perspective. Laura Rountree Smith takes the most ordinary setting—a backyard—and turns it into a landscape of adventure and peril. She gives Roly-Poly real personality. He’s cautious, determined, and a little bit brave. You root for him. The book is also a beautiful snapshot of a slower time. There’s no grand villain or complex plot, just the simple, universal struggle to find your way home. It’s gentle and kind. Reading it, you can’t help but look at the small creatures around you with more curiosity and respect. It’s a lesson in empathy, wrapped in a short adventure.
Final Verdict
This is a perfect book for a quiet afternoon. It’s ideal for parents looking for a gentle, classic story to read aloud to young kids—they’ll love the tiny hero and his big scares. It’s also a sweet pick for any adult who enjoys nostalgic children’s literature or wants a brief, comforting escape. If you like the idea of ‘The Borrowers’ or ‘Charlotte’s Web,’ but want something much shorter and simpler, you’ll find a friend in Roly-Poly. Just be warned: you might start checking for little armored travelers before you mow the lawn.
